Plagiocephaly, NOT just a cosmetic issue.

Plagiocephaly, NOT just a cosmetic issue.

It is a common misconception that Plagiocephaly is, “just a flat spot on the back of the head.”

This was of thinking has long led to poor intervention and slow responses to correcting the issue of skull deformities.

Plagiocephaly is not just a cosmetic issue.

The facial bones are attached to the skull and because Plagiocephaly is a rotational deformity, this means that as the skull compression (flat spot) occurs, so too does the facial bones attached to that portion of the skull go with it.

Infants with deformational plagiocephaly comprise a high-risk group for developmental difficulties presenting as subtle problems of cerebral dysfunction during the school-age years.” Another study found that children with plagiocephaly were more likely to require special education services in school than their non-affected siblings (34.9% vs. 6.6%, respectively). The services they required included speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

In addition, skull deformities may contribute to headaches, migraines, painful teething, jaw and dental problems. It is therefore recommended that treatment takes place as early as possible, in order to restore normal head shape.

This rotation can also lead to sinus drainage issues, increased risk of ear infection and degenerative changes in the jaw.

Time is limited to seek intervention as cranial remoulding can only be done between the ages of 4 and 18months.
